Important Info:

It was great to meet with many of you for conferences last week!  Feel free to follow up with me if you have any further questions.  If you were unable to attend, but would like to discuss your child's progress in 3rd grade, don't hesitate to reach out to me as well.

For those of you wishing to get more involved with our school community (or are just looking for a space to stay up to date), check out the Friends of Webster, a group for families and members of the community interested in supporting Webster Elementary.  Updates from Friends of Webster can be found on their facebook page as well as their official website.

Webster's Fall Festival is coming up!  A flyer was sent home with your children this week with more details.  Webster's Fall Festival will take place Friday, November 11th from 5pm-7pm.  Hope you all can make it!

*Reminder: No school next Thursday and Friday (November 3rd & 4th).

In Our Classroom:

  • Math:
    • We've begun our second unit, Numbers to 1,000.  We have been discussing mental math strategies, different ways to represent numbers, and using rounded numbers to solve more complex equations.
    • Our class utilizes Khan Academy as a supplement to our Math Workshop.  Many families expressed interest in extension activities at home, and Khan Academy is a great source for extra practice!  Each student has their own username and our class password is webster425.
  • Social Studies/Science:
    • We have wrapped up our first social studies and are slowly moving into our first science unit.  In this unit, we will be learning about space and our solar system!  This week we watched a classic Bill Nye the Science Guy episode on outer space (you can watch it here) and read some books on astronomy and space exploration.
  • Reader's and Writer's Workshop:
    • In our Reader's Workshop we've been learning about how to identify the mood of a story through examples from the text and illustrations.  We practiced together using the book, Coming Home: From the Life of Langston Hughes by Floyd Cooper.  During Writer's Workshop, we have been continuing to learn about writing opinion peices and structuring our writing into paragraphs.
  • Social Skills:
    • 3rd grade was asked to lead our all-school meeting on Friday!  Our class led by bringing the school together with our Webster school chant and putting together skits that reflect one of Webster's core values: Act With Compassion.  Ask your children about examples of acting with compassion that they've seen!
