Dear Families,

Here's what we've been up to in room 316!

  • We are working on using mental math strategies to make complex problems simpler to solve and learning to round numbers to the closest 10 or 100.  Ask your child what strategies they like to use for addition and subtraction!
  • Our class utilizes Khan Academy as a supplement to our Math Workshop.  Many families expressed interest in extension activities at home, and Khan Academy is a great source for extra practice!  Each student has their own username and our class password is webster425.

  • We have been learning about space, our solar system, and the moon!  Students have begun working in science journals at different points throughout the week and we are doing research about the planets in our solar system.

Reader's and Writer's Workshop:

  • We've moved on from opinion writing and are now looking at informative writing and texts.  To tie in with our science unit, we've been reading informational texts related to the moon, space, and our solar system!  We are also doing research about these topics and we will be using that information to create our own informative book!

  • Each Friday, we set aside time to extend and deepen our learning (usually in regards to our content, i.e. social studies and science).  This Friday, we are making Moon project collages with construction paper and white crayon for the stars!  Students also learned about how to construct a Haiku poem (5 claps, 7 claps, 5 claps) and created their own uniqe Hiakus about the Moon!

Important Notes:

For those of you wishing to get more involved with our school community (or are just looking for a space to stay up to date), check out the Friends of Webster, a group for families and members of the community interested in supporting Webster Elementary.  Updates from Friends of Webster can be found on their facebook page as well as their official website.

Webster Sharing Night will be Thursday, December 1st from 5-7 pm.  Hope to see you all there!

If your child is interested in participating in the Fidgety Fiary Tale Musical Theater, check out this link for more information on how and where to audition!

*Reminder: Next week is a short week because of the Thanksgiving holiday!  There will be no school Wednesday, November 23 - Friday, November 25.  Happy Holidays!

*Note:  Just a reminder that toys, gum and candy should stay at home.  We have been seeying a lot of toys come out during instruction time and some students have been bringing out candy.*
